What is the top 20 percentile of indian boards for IIT ?

1. What is normalization and the top 20 percentile of the NIOS board?

Most NIOS Main aspirants are likely aware that the NIOS Main Rank List is prepared by combining NIOS Main scores and Normalized Marks of Class XII in the ratio of 60:40. However, very few understand what the normalization procedure actually is and how normalized scores for Class XII results are calculated. JEE Main Merit Ranks form the basis of admissions to undergraduate engineering courses at prestigious institutions across India, including 31 NITs, 18 IIITs, and 18 GFTIs.

2. The normalization process requires us to know the following

Percentile Score -

A percentile score is the value below which a certain percentage of observations fall. For example, 20 percent is 20 percent of the rating below that score.

Normalization procedure for Class XII Board marks

Due to major changes in national exams, JEE Interface Group (JIG) decided in 2013 that 50% of the board should pass to equalize the percentage of different categories/exam bodies and load them into the whole Indian JEE - Major percentage. The remaining 50% will be optimized by equalizing the percentage of each group/reviewer.

Accordingly, the detailed procedure for normalization of Board marks will be as follows:

(A) Enter the total grades (A0) for each student in JEE-Main.

(B) Compute the percentile (P) of each student on the basis of aggregate marks in his/her own board (B0) computed from the list of five subjects specified (each marked out of 100). The percentile is to be computed among all students of the board whose subject combinations meet the eligibility criteria of JEE-Main.

(C) Identify the JEE-Main aggregate marker corresponding to the percentage (P) of the All India rank. Regard this as B1.

(D) Also, determine the JEE- Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) among the set of aggregate scores obtained in the JEE- Main by the students of that board. Regard this as B2.

The candidate's score on the board will be calculated:

Bfinal = 0.5 * (B1 + B2)

For CFTI admissions decided using a 60:40 ratio of JEE-Main performance and Board performance, composite scores will be calculated to mark the merit list:

C = 0.6 * A0 + 0.4 * Bfinal

Five subjects to be used for normalization:

  • 1. Physics
  • 2. Mathematics
  • 3. Any one of the subjects Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology and Computer Science
  • 4. One language
  • 5. Any subject other than the above four subject
