What Is NIOS
NIOS is an "Open School" to cater to the needs of a heterogeneous group of learners up to pre-degree level. It was started as a project with in-built flexibilities by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 1979. In 1986, the National Policy on Education suggested strengthening the Open School System for extending open learning facilities in a phased manner at secondary level all over the country as an independent system with its own curriculum and examination leading to certification. Consequently, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India set up the National Open School (NOS) in November 1989. The pilot project of CBSE on Open School was amalgamated with NOS. Through a Resolution (No. F.5-24/90 Sch.3 dated 14 September 1990 published in the Gazette of India on 20 October 1990), the National Open School (NOS) was vested with the authority to register, examine and certify students registered with it up to pre-degree level courses. In July 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development amended the nomenclature of the organisation from the National Open School (NOS) to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with a mission to provide relevant continuing education at school stage, up to pre-degree level through Open Learning system to prioritized client groups as an alternative to formal system, in pursuance of the normative national policy documents and in response to the need assessments of the people, and through it to make its share of contribution:
- To universalisation of education,
- To greater equity and justice in society, and
- To the evolution of a learning society.

Value of NIOS after clearing IIT-JEE or PMT?
Indian Institute of technology are the most prestigious institutes of India that students aspire to get into. It is the dream of every PCM student to study at IIT. One may get admission at any IIT after clearing a test organized by all the IITs and also getting passed by a recognized board like ICSE CBSE or NIOS BOARD. Some feel that the nios degree is not accepted in getting admission in iit institutes, which is not true. NIOS is a government of India recognized board which is given value in all competitive and professional courses that students take after clearing their 12th. As there are many students dreaming to study at IIT or be an IITian. The competition is not as easy as the nios 12th exams to clear. Almost 350,000 students each year appear in IIT JEE. Out of which nearly some thousand students are selected. We can find coaching institutes everywhere which helps students to clear IIT JEE. It is a fact that coaching institutes for IIT JEE are more than double in number of total students selected in IIT JEE.
Coaching institutes for IIT JEE can be found at almost every corner of India. Size and strength of students vary at these places. But, all have the same purpose to give students guidance for clearing IIT JEE. No doubt many fail to produce even a single IITian in their lifetime. Students of 10+2 mathematics are crazy about IIT. Maybe you are one of them too who desperately wants to be a part of IIT and has a degree from NIOS.
First step in preparing for iit jee is the concept building step. In this step you should start reading low level books. Low level books are those books which reduce the gap between 10th and JEE level concepts. These are 11th, 12th level books. These books take very less time to cover. Ideally, 2-3 months is more than enough to cover 11th books and 2 months for 12th books. Time for 12th level would be less as most of the new concepts which apply brake in understanding are in 11th books. I would suggest going with NCERT books or the books suggested by your school. For those who think the ideal time to cover these books is less. NIOS class 12th level books are easier and give you ample time to prepare for the IIT tough competition by giving you more study time and thinking less of NIOS Board exams. I would like to point out that for an IIT JEE level book you have to cover around 3-4 times more pages and 3-4 times harder problems.
You will feel very energetic while solving these problems. Not much depth of theory is needed to solve these books. Theory in the books will be sufficient to solve all the problems. This step will make you familiar with 11th and 12th std. syllabus. By this step, it will be very easy to read various inter-linked chapters of the JEE syllabus. As the problems asked in JEE level books generally need basic knowledge of many different concepts from different chapters. So, overall this Step will take around 4-5 months to complete, i.e., if you have started the preparation in June. Then, till Oct you should have completed this step.
